Dined in for lunch today 3/14/12 Now I have eaten here plenty of times in the past, almost on a weekly basis when I worked near Ellicott City. I am absolutely in love with the California Dreaming sandwich and all of Johnnys soups, especially his new england clam chowder. However when I went there today, even though completely out of my way since I now work in Annapolis I was desperately craving that sandwich! there was a rather long line and I was with an antsy 2 yr old so one of the waitresses came and asked if I was planning on eating in and I said yes, so she very kindly said she'd seat me and take my order at the table to try and help me out, even though they normally take your order at the counter (which I always thought was dumb) so we sit down and wait...and wait...and wait until everyone in line has now ordered and received their food. Then the SAME waitress comes up to the table and has the NERVE to scold me for not reading the sign and sitting at a table instead of ordering at the counter, so I told her we are only sitting here because you PULLED me out of line and said you'd take my order here, she then goes...oh....yeah I did. Sorry about that, I'll take your orders after I run some more food. At this point its been 30 min since being in the line and I was ready to pull her hair out , but didn't of course and she sent another waitress to take my order who then AGAIN explained to me I was confused to think I could sit down before ordering so at that point I pretty much let her have it in the nicest way possible that this was the other waitresses screw up, not mine, who has dined here enough times I could recite the menu back to you. She then apologized and took 15% off my bill, big whoop. I would of rather had the waitress apologize to my face for her attitude rather then make herself scarce, and even if that had been my first time dining there and missed the sign that said order at counter, I would have left as soon as the waitress walked over with her attitude. I miss the guy and girl duo that used to always work there, they were very friendly and never ever treated customers that way. I will come back but for to go only and only because I have tried and failed at re-creating Johnnys food, which is very good. So 4 stars for food and 1 for service.

I love it when the Chef brings you your food and says, "You're gonna love this." And you do. And then he checks back with you in a few minutes just to make sure. Great food, great restaurant. I had the Shepard's Pie and my husband had one of the Panini sandwiches. Both were excellent. The rustic bread is wonderful and the Williamsburg coleslaw is also really good.

Had lunch here with my sister and daughter. I had the greek pizza which was excellent. The service was good too. I dont understand the whole ordering process. Hire a couple wait staff and enclose the kitchen and this place would be much nicer experience.

I haven't been to Johnny's recently, but I liked it enough to recommend it to a number of people and bring friends back when I went to college in the area. The location is in the quirky and fun Old Ellicott area. Fun to go to after shopping on Main Street. We entered the bistro, were given a table and menus, and then had to go to the counter to order (which is a little strange, admittedly... I'd prefer either a waiter or just the counter and let me get my food and sit). The selection includes soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza, and lots of fancy tapas. The ingredients are pretty luxe (king salmon, jumbo shrimp) which might explain the price, but still... I wish it were more affordable. I'd eat there more often. The portion size for the tapas is good for me (I don't eat a whole lot at one sitting), so you might want to order a couple, or some fries on the side. It's also just fun to get a few to share and try with friends. The soups are lovely. Ginger carrot was one I remember, as well as their crab soup (NOM!!). The BEST thing I ever had there was their cheese pizza.... it had HUGE blobs of ricotta cheese all over it. Perfect for two people. I also really liked that Johnny himself would come out to check and see if everything was to our liking, and to kind of just chat. He recognized us after a while which was cool. Maybe we'll stop in soon.

My friend and I were on our way to the Friendly Inn for some bluegrass, and decided to stop in old Ellicott City for dinner first. It's a very cute, picturesque area. However, most of the places in historic Ellicott City are too expensive for our bluegrass budget. This place, however, was just what we were looking for. It's small and homey, and while they don't spare anything food-wise, they save a bit of money by having you come up to them and give your order. We were starved, so we tried one of their tapas (I believe it was hummus with sundried tomatoes), and shared the white 3 cheese pizza. AMAZING. This was so incredibly delicious. The crust on the pizza was beautifully made and just tasted so good. The pita served with the hummus was nice and warm. It was absolutely hit the spot. We were hoping to try their homemade creme brulee, but were stuffed, so we agreed we'd have to come back. The pizza, hummus, diet coke, and a beer, cost us $25. Most of the places around were more expensive for one entree alone. The only thing I wished for is for them to have a few more vegetarian options, but other than that, this place was heaven. If you're ever around this area, definitely go here.

I stopped by Ellicott City and Johnny's on whim over the 4th of July. I found the daily special - a crab cake sandwich to be delightful. While I agree with the other reviewers that the counter service is a bit confusing and can be very slow. While I found the portions to be good, I had a side salad with my sandwich, it did seem to be slightly overpriced. Despite these minor drawbacks I would recommend Johnny's for quick lunch when you are interested in something other than a burger fries.

My wife and I happened to be in old Ellicott City yesterday and happened upon this place. I was quite impressed right away with the friendliness of the wait staff. The building was beautifully appointed... even the rest rooms were very nicely decorated and very clean. The real draw here, though, was the food. We are fans of tapas and were looking forward to seeing what Johnny had to offer in that regard. One of the waitresses left a small sample of New England clam chowder on the table. That small sample sold me; I HAD to have a bowl of that fine soup. My wife had stuffed portobello mushrooms that she absolutely loved. I had the bacon wrapped sea scallops. The food was not only delicious, it was beautiful as well. We now have a new favorite place to go and are looking forward to our next visit.

let me start out by saying i like this place. it has a great location and nice waiters but the downside to this place is how you have to order at the counter (which is a slow go) then sit down and wait for the food to be served. it looses something. When you walk in, you think it's a great restaurant, but having to order yourself brings a cheapness to a place that is not cheap. it may not seem like a big deal but if you go there you will understand what i mean. Pizza was good, salmon was good, panni not. nice soups.

Great thin gourmet pizzas. Relaxed atmosphere, i.e. you order at a counter then sit down and wait for the food.

Stopped in for lunch with my sister the week before xmas. Place was not busy, 2 or 3 other tables. I've seen others say it is counter service, but when we walked in we where asked to pick a table and a waitress would be over. She was, about 20 minutes later. Ordered the mushroom app stuffed with sausage, which came out *after* our sandwiches, lacked salt. I had the smoked salmon panini, bread was too heavy, overpowered the flavor of the salmon. My sister had the crabcake, she said she enjoyed it. Our drinks where never refilled and we didn't see our waitress again till we asked to pay. Bill was over $50 for 2 sandwiches, an app and 2 sodas -- too high for medicore food and service.

Came here for lunch on a Saturday after reading about the delicious soups, creative entrees, and the problematic service. Definitely liked the food but am not sure I'd rush to come back unless I wanted to feel crowded and rushed while dropping nearly 20 dollars a person on lunch. First off, I'm not a restaurant designer but I'm pretty sure that the place could make better use of its space especially if it didn't require a line for ordering. What is the logic behind the system of having servers but making you order at the counter? Does it mean you have fewer servers? Really, I agree with everyone that the place should consider changing its format or at least improving the service. The food is great, but the kitchen was slow, and the soup I ordered arrived at the table a whooping 30 seconds before the entrees. Also, it's impossible to get refills on drinks and even though I wanted dessert, it didn't happen because I didn't feel like getting back in line and then waiting and waiting for a piece of pie. Recommend the place for food but the setting is not ideal for such good comfort good.

So, I need to join the chorus crying out for an end to the ridiculous service situation. The food was pretty good. My lunch companion and I both had the special ("Tuscan" chicken panini and fries). The sandwiches were quite tasty, the fries were good but nothing amazing. The restaurant was pretty cramped, we were seated way in the back where it got unpleasantly warm. We also didn't get visited by the waitress very often. Drink refills were very slow and delivered somewhat reluctantly. I hate it when the glass is 80% ice, too. Pet peeve, I know, but there's no reason for it. Anyway, if you're in Ellicott City, it's an ok place to stop.

Recently stumbled across this little bistro in Ellicott City and loved it! We only tried their soup of the day (Clam Chowder - yum!) and a few tapas but everything we ordered was very good. The servers were very nice and attentive. I'm excited to go back to try something else!

Food: Good portions, fast service, great taste - kudos to the chef Price: Very reasonable for Historic Ellicott City Service: Very friendly & efficient. Try to get the slender brunette server, I think her name was either Kayla or Taylor. She is one of the best you'll find anywhere. Décor: This is the only reason I did not give 5 stars. Décor is nice, but there are some things that need to be updated. Many of the string lights are out; bathrooms could use some painting & updating. Signage: Even though the hours of business are posted on the door, call first as they are not always open during the posted hours...as I found out the hard way! :( Also, inside sign states to place your order at the counter...when actually the server takes your order at the table. Overall, would definitely recommend Johnny's. Our family loves going there...especially for the bread pudding! (Yum)

The S.O. and I tried Johnny's Bistro a few weeks ago on a lazy Saturday afternoon while wandering around old town Ellicott City. We actually only popped in for a soup (for her) and a sandwich (for myself). The food was much better than I expected from such a tiny little place. Although my sandwich was just small little lunch portion it had a range of flavors and just a general succulence in the beef that was much more suited to a hearty dinner. The S.O.'s soup also had a creaminess and richness that I'd associate with a much bigger meal. Maybe it was just lots of cream, but it tasted great and at a restaurant the food is the thing. I would like to get around to trying a bit more from their menu, but now we come to the reason they didn't get 5 stars. First, the way the restaurant is laid out is a little off-putting. You go up to the bar and order at the window and then they bring it to your table. That would be fine, except that it's as expensive as a normal restaurant. Yes, the food was really tasty, but I wasn't really in the mood to drop $30 on a light lunch. So verdict: Really good food, but you're gonna pay for it...and the weird ordering at the window thing.

Apparently someone cobbled 4 different dining establishments into on Frankenraunt and this student of natural philosphy tried to hide his experiment in the basement of a building. The food is great, but it does not go with the setting, which does not justify the price and the name doesn't go with anything. Also, the owners need to stop flogging the waitstaff or whatever they are doing that makes everyone so gloomy. Recommendation: Pass until major renovations occur.

I very much enjoyed our stop in our meanderings around Ellicott City at Jonny's Bistro. You order at the back of the restaurant, so sometimes you get your table snatched from under you, but we went for a later lunch and thus were able to get another table without too much trouble. We were really happy with our meals. Super fresh ingredients and pretty quick preparation. I got the Crab Melt special and the crab cake was a fantastic size and the bun was deliciously light and sweet. The slaw that it was served with was the most impressive thing though. Fresh, crisp cabbage with a unique oil and vinegar dressing, keeping it incredibly light. We also got the house salad and chili, both were also excellent. The chili has a slightly sweet, smoky flavor and is made with pulled beef, not ground, so a extra bit of love included!

The free soup samples are enough to bring me coming back for more. The pea soup was surprisingly tasty. I have had the Shrimp and Crab salad and a California Dreaming turkey and bacon sandwich; both delicious. You would be a complete NOODLEHEAD if you don't order a PIZZA there. Tastiest, softest, most flavorful crust and pizza I have ever eaten. I can't wait to go back and try another creation. The owner/ chef is friendly, but the servers could be nicer. They seem under staffed. Please, go and eat and then stop by Sweet Cascades for some desert. (Next door, sweet shop).

There's only one nice server here. She's slim brunette. There rest of them are turds and the skinny guy is the mayor of them all. He definitely didn't want to serve my 2yo son and I, and he made it known. His crappy attitude definitely rubs off on the rest...like they follow his lead. He walked away when I asked him a question. Food: Not good. It's like it was made at a 7-11. Not worth the money or your time.

A fantastic experience. Everything was perfect as far as the food. The servers were too anxious to be helpful but they were young. It's hard to complain about trying too hard. I had the Gobbler which is a panini with turkey, brie, greens and pesto. Perfect combination and wonderful, crisp bread. And the homemade slaw was fantastic. Vinegar base versus mayo made it lighter and a good compliment to the meal. The owner Johnny came out to check on the diners and seemed genuinely interested in how we liked the meal. His recommendation to try the bread pudding with bourbon sauce was spot on. The best I've ever had. It was also made there. I will make a point to come back at my next opportunity.

I've loved this place for years. I like that they often have table service now, too. I hate to have to get up to order, etc. The specials are always varied, and the quality is consistent. A delicious find on Main St. I always love whatever I get! I do get annoyed when he closes randomly. I get set on going, and then he is closed without warning, for a siesta or just bc it got slow in the late afternoon. I always check now before I go. It's worth it, and I'm always disappointed if I miss it. I think it's just Mondays and between lunch and dinner occasionally--but when you are trying to sneak on an early date night dinner after getting off work early, but before picking up the kids from daycare, it's not a guarantee.

Okay, so I walked in here bracing myself against the potentially bad service mentioned in so many reviews so I can't say this is a completely fair review. I needed pizza in a pinch and they happened to be open(I'm on Main St. a bit and it seems they're never open within business hours.) So it is really weird that there is a window where you order, but you get stopped by the staff before you ever get to it. Since I was getting take out I was kinda put off by being stopped since I just wanted to go straight back there and place my order. However the staff were polite and accommodating. My pizzas came out, I decided to sample two: the Greek, minus feta and sausage. Their pizzas had a good crust and were really well seasoned. I'm not sure if I'd go out if my way planning to return, but they won't let you down if you want pizza. Some of their specialties looked unique and well thought out, and from what I could see on the tables, their food looks good. It's a bit dark in the restaurant, and the small size gives it an intimate ambiance.

My boyfriend and I visited for a late lunch on a Saturday. It is a cute little restaurant on Main Street. That's about all it has going for it. The service was just not good. It was a little busy, and there was no one to seat us when we first arrived. The sign said to seat yourself, so we awkwardly started walking toward a table and then someone pointed us to a table and gave us menus. It took a while to place our order, but once placed, the food arrived quickly. After our food arrived, both of our drinks were completely empty and our server walked by them several times and did not offer to refill them. We finally had to flag someone down for a refill, and it took several minutes to get them back. Foodwise, it is okay. Far too expensive for what you pay for. There are much better places in the area, and I would not come back.

I must agree with everyone else on this counter ordering thing. This was my second visit here. I stopped in for lunch around Christmas, and I thought the counter ordering was just a lunch thing. Tonight, I learned that is the norm! The food was good, and I got a glass of wine. I could have used two more, however I didn't feel like standing in line and leaving two kids at the table! I am with a previous reviewer: Johnny you are missing out on revenue. People don't want to stand in line for seconds on beverages, or to order a dessert. What the heck is the reasoning behind this bizarre concept??? I don't get it. Bottom line: food seems good (not a terribly great menu though). I also thought the prices were quite high and I tipped but got to thinking....who did I tip...the cashier?? Ok next!!!!

Beautiful downtown to meander through, and this place has an equally classy interior. Nothing fancy, just vintage feeling. Good menu with a wide selection that should make everyone happy. I do find it odd how you are seated by a hostess, given a menu, but then have to go order and pay at a counter. A waitress then brings your food. Just be wary of the 'specials' like crab cakes that are market price. They are super expensive!! Huge size, but about twice the price of all other items on the menu. This is my mistake though; I wont' hold it against them.

Johnny's is a killer place for a quick bite to eat. I work on Main Street in Old Ellicott City and this is a great place for a date night, quick lunch, and just about anything in between. I highly recommend the bistro sandwich, and my wife (who has Celiac's and must eat gluten free) absolutely loved the salmon. She is a harsh critic, so whenever she wants to go back to a place again and again, you know they take excellent care in their food & food prep. Fresh food, excellent bread, great choices. Johnny's is a must-visit next time you're shopping around in Old Ellicott City.

Every time I go back to Johnny's Bistro, the more annoying I find it. The ordering process is just wrong, annoying, stupid, aggravating, and pretty much every negative term I can think of. Please, please, please ditch the counter service. The staff seat you, the staff give you a menu, the staff deliver your food. The only thing they don't do is take the order at the table. You have to line up at the back of the place, where other patrons are seated and trying to eat, where servers are whizzing in and out of the kitchen, to order. I was five back in the line. I actually timed how long the line takes. The person taking orders is the same person who's filling drinks, and the same person who's processing payment, answering questions, running dupes, etc. If it's an order for two people and uncomplicated, it averages two minutes per order to enter it and pay. If the patrons have questions, want wine/beer, or have a larger order, it can double that. If you're at the end of the line when it's busy, you can be standing there for 10-15 minutes or longer. Stupid. Johnny's, you also lose sales because of this. No one wants to stand in line again for a second glass of wine, another beer, or dessert. That's $10-15 a head you could be picking up if only a) someone would come to the table to offer, and b) you didn't have to pay for everything up front. The counter thing worked when it was Sorrento's, and the kitchen was slinging subs, burgers, pizza, and fries. It doesn't work here. The dining room's small enough to cover with the three runners you've already got. Please just let them do that last bit of service. One good thing: the mushroom soup I had was very, very good. It had lots of savory mushroom flavor, just the right amount of seasoning, was just rich enough without being too much, and was a good portion. The Greek pizza the missus ordered was not bad, either. But the Reuben I ordered was a disaster. The pretzel roll was crispy around the edges, which would have been OK had any other part of the sandwich contained any moisture whatsoever. The meat and cheese had been flat-topped for so long that it was all reduced to jerky consistency, and the small scattering of sauerkraut and mini-dollop of dressing did nothing to assist. It literally sucked all the moisture out of my mouth, which was bad because no-one will ever offer you a refill on your drink. I don't even know if that's an option. I don't think I'll be headed back to Johnny's Bistro, which is a shame. It has the potential to be a really nice light dinner option, but it's just so damned inconsistent and awkward.

I went to this restaurant with my boyfriend over the weekend- we figured we'd have a nice lunch. We have been here before and the food was great. This time the food was pretty good... The only thing that I didn't love was the atmosphere. It wasn't too busy which was great (It was a late lunch). The girls waiting the tables were very nice and they seemed to be working hard! We were having a nice time until this beast of a man started yelling like an animal in the kitchen. It sounded like he was yelling at employees for something silly. But he took it to an entire other level that was just so inappropriate. It was a little uncomfortable. Everyone in the restaurant eating and trying to enjoy their meals and company could definitely all hear him. It was so unprofessional of him. It was an older man (possibly Johnny). He just wouldn't stop yelling at this one girl about some silly thing. He was relentless. This went on for like 30 minutes. I don't want to support a business that treats their employees in such an unprofessional way. It disgusted me. I felt so sorry for those poor girls getting yelled at. He seemed so disgruntled it was almost scary. The food is good but not good enough for me to ever want to sit through that again.

Really liked our lunch at Johnny's. The Bistro sandwich (basically, a steak sandwich) was great, with tasty roast beef and zesty horseradish on ciabatta bread. Very good cole slaw as well. SO had a grilled chicken Caesar salad and enjoyed it. The chicken in her salad didn't appear to be simply reheated Tyson's chicken breasts or some other shortcut. Everything tasted fresh. My only (minor) complaints--the place is pretty small and it's a little dark in there. Otherwise, we're definitely heading back.

I have lived in Maryland for 35 years, but I never visited Ellicott City (outside Baltimore). I always felt this was just another Baltimore type suburb but was warmly surprised to find a beautiful picturesque old town nestled among hills, trees, and an old train station. The sidewalks were busy and there were many cafés and shops. We entered this mom and pop café for a late lunch on a Saturday. A young woman at the door asked if we had reservations. I was a bit puzzled because this is a mundane café and I was under the impression that food was ordered at the counter by paying customers before finding a table to sit down. I thought-----WTF!!!!! Nevertheless, I thought this was quite funny, ha, ha. In any event the hostess changed her mind and got us a table. Just as I was getting up to go to the counter to order food the hostess sent an actual waitress. The service was fine and as I said before---------- everywhere I go I always get good service. We had artichoke and crab dip and it was quite good. A sample of the clam chowder was quite excellent. My salad was above average for $8.99 and my glass of Malbec seem a bit on the low side, but it was a good wine so no big deal. My wife and daughter had sandwiches and they were satisfied. We shared dessert and it was fine, but a bit pricey for 8 dollars. As a side note: I wanted coffee with the dessert and by chance the young hostess came to the table to take my order. I told her i wanted black coffee and she said they had all kinds of coffee, but no black coffee. I thought she was putting me on, but apparently she was serious. Since I have a thick English accent my son in law spoke for me and asked for black coffee. The young hostess said they had no black coffee. Thankfully a passing waitress overhead the conversation and promptly informed us they had black coffee. In any event I enjoyed myself and the bit about the coffee was real funny. I suspect this was her first day on the job. No problems from my side. I have to give this place three stars because the price is a bit out of proportion to the food. It is not very expensive, but the prices are more than the average for similar cafés elsewhere. Otherwise, it is a solid four stars. This observation was also made by other yelpers.

I struggled on the review for this place because it was a tale of ups and downs. Such highs and such lows. In the end, I had to settle on 3 stars, but half of this review is 4 and 5 star quality, while other parts are 1 and 2 star. My wife and I had missed breakfast and, visiting Historic Ellicott City for Small Business Saturday, we knew we had to try Johnny's. Johnny's has always been packed when I walk by, so finding the restaurant empty (it having opened no more than 3 minutes before) made it an easy choice. Now, the highs. The menu looked wonderful with a varied assortment of sandwiches and pizzas that looked fun and exciting. No boring ham and cheese here, every sandwich looked like an adventure. The adventure my wife and I instantly agreed upon was their burger special, cooked medium on a gourmet bun topped with gruyere cheese and their famous crab and artichoke dip. Doesn't that sound decadent and delicious? Other highs. Apparently, Johnny's makes homemade soup every day and the wait staff gives out samples to the customers. The soup we tried that day was fabulous. My wife and I both agreed that, in the end, we should have picked that for this cold November day. The waitress we had was friendly and knowledgeable. With a list of specials that long, I was amazed that she could rattle off the entire thing without looking at her notes (or taking a breath). But what goes up must come down. The burger came out well-done and bone dry. Thank God for the dip that gave it some moisture. I know that some places only serve well-done burgers, but we were specifically asked how we wanted them cooked and these weren't even close. And as the restaurant filled up, our waitress disappeared. Now, I've always seen this place packed, but when we left, the restaurant was only about half full. If the wait staff gets bogged down with the restaurant half full (and only an hour into opening) I don't know what it's like at peak capacity. In the end, another server had to get us the check. The meal was pricey for two burger and two sodas, but nothing out of the ordinary for Ellicott City's Main Street. And I will try Johnny's again. That menu looked too good to give up after two bad burgers. And next time, I'll pay at the counter (the usual way to pay), even if the waitress suggests that we don't need to "because we're not busy right now." So, the ups and downs lead me to a 3. I look forward to trying again.

Quant little Bistro tucked in Historic Ellicott City, MD. Specializing in Rustic Bread Sandwiches, Paninis, Innovative Salads, Tapas and Gourmet Pizzas. The wine was mostly California vineyards with glass and bottle service. Half priced bottle with asterisks on Tuesday and Thursday. It was a cute environment that felt comfortable and cozy just like Ellicott. Cute place to hide away for bite to eat. I'll be back!

We had a wonderful lunch at Johnny's Bistro several weeks ago, and I am still thinking about it! It was so hard to select what to eat! Everything looked delicious. I finally chose a tapa dish of grilled charbroiled lime shrimp with garlic, herbs and white wine. It was served with a French baguette, and I opted for a glass of Pinot Grigio to go along with it. It was heavenly. I loved the location and the atmosphere. I can't wait to go back!

First visit today for lunch, and the service was very good! Got the wilted kale salad and it was super! When it arrived on a small plate, I was afraid that it would not satisfy my appetite, but it was just right for a lite lunch. The flavor of the lightly sautéed kale was perfectly complemented by the grilled shrimp and touch of asiago. Others in party ordered the reuben and the Bistro. Both were satisfied. Will definitely go back. BTW - orders were taken at the table, not counter.

After reading about this place on Yelp, we decided to make the trek from Silver Spring to Ellicott City. We weren't disappointed. We ordered the hummus and pita, as well as the Greek pizza, as well as the grilled cheese and fries for the kids. The hummus was good, particularly with the freshly toasted pita, but the crust on the pizza was extraordinary. They really seem to have a knack for baking here. The counter service is a bit confusing - you order from the counter, but have to wait for someone to come by to ask for a soda refill. Also, one party of six was waited on at their table, while everyone else there had to order from the counter. But these are minor quibbles. I definitely look forward to coming back and sampling more items from the menu, assuming I can tear myself away from that wonderful pizza.

I've been there only once. Can't give you a full experienced low down.. but my one time I was there. Got seats by the window The hostess/order taker was nice The food was pretty darn good They make a soup du jour from scratch.. We had a potato leek soup..awesome! I think it's a tinny little bit pricey for the portions but the flavor of the food is awesome!!! It's right there in Ellicott City's Historic District. Pretty cool town.

What a wonderful place to eat. Without question the best casual atmosphere food in downtown Ellicott City. A creative menu that changes with the seasons. Reasonable prices. Neat ordering system that just works well once you figure it out. Sophisticated decor, yet completely casual. Right in the heart of downtown. I think it's the best thing to happen to eating in Ellicott City in a long time. This is something worth driving out of your way for. If they have the grilled romaine hearts, get them. If not on the menu, ask. So simple and yet so fantastic. I could eat them every day. The soups I've had there have all been divine. The pizza is not a traditional pie, but it is very good. Next time you are in Ellicott City, eat here. You will be glad you did. But be warned, there is no traditional table service. You need to go order at the window. So if you go sit down and feel disappointed at the terrible service, it's your own fault. Updated to add that after 3 years, not much has changed since my first visit. The soups are still fantastic, the service is still weird, and the dishes are fresh and delicious. The chicken panini with brie, ham, and roasted roma tomatoes that my date had yesterday was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had the pleasure to (help) eat. Go for the food, it's great. I hope all the people here complaining about having to stand in line to order food follow through with their threats to stay away. Maybe if that happens Johnny's won't have every single table filled with people like it was yesterday.... Edited for 2012. The service is still weird, but Johnny's makes wonderful food from scratch. Every time I go I wonder why I've waited so long to go back. Go there just to get a big bowl of soup with flatbread crackers on a cool day. You will thank me.

Really fantastic sandwich menu. Delicious! Great trendy but casual ambiance, friendly wait staff. Pretty reasonable prices for Ellicott City I guess, but a little high for a cafeteria style place serving sandwiches. Food is good enough, however, to keep us coming back.

OK I'm writing this review after about my 10th visit. I wanted to make sure i went a few times as to get a pretty accurate experience to pass along. The food is good. Probably a 7.3-7.6/10. The portions are just on the bubble of being too small. It's $$ for the amount of food you get, especially for not having table service. The Tapas are WAY, WAY, WAY to expensive for what you get. Ignore the small sleeve of the menu THE ISSUE: SERVICE. It's by far the most schizophrenic and confusing front of the house in the history of Bistro's. You seat yourself. Someone brings you setups. menus and tells you the specials. No water. You have to look at the menu, walk up to a window, order your food. You pay for it then and there. So, you if you wanna do apps first, you pay for them. Then, you go back and order entrees and pay for them. They give you a #. A server brings you your food. They bring you fountain soda, but not bottled stuff. For that, you have to go back each time and buy individual drinks. You can't just run a tab and pay for it when done. Then, if you want dessert, they take your order and bring it to you along with a receipt that you take back up to the register. There is a tip basket next to the confusing window/cash register. So, do you leave the tip there or do you leave it on the table for one of the five people who "waited" on you but didn't really wait on you. Today, as per usual, there was one "server" who was personable. The rest were grumpy and acted like substituting Turkey for Corned Beef was a matter they needed to bring before the board of trustees. They have candles on the table with stained glass covers. When i sat down at 2pm today, i asked one of the "servers" if i could get a lighter to fire it up. A sigh and i was ignored. I asked another one. Response: "We usually only light them for dinner". I said well i'd like to light it now please. Another sigh. She comes out and again says "i'm just letting you know these really are only lit for dinner". Maybe they should take them off the table? In any event, they are the only place i have ever been to that is set up this way. It's self inflicted hassle and confusion that isn't needed. It's been like this since they opened, and they seem to have no stimulus to change. I bring people here who have never been, and they say the exact same thing i'm saying every time So, if you aren't really hungry, and you have all the patience in the world, this is the place for you. It's too bad because like i said, what little food you get is decent .

Johnny' is one of those places that isn't bad enough to never go back to, but isnt great enough to want to rush back to either. They have FINALLY figured out they can't charge $23.00 for a dinner special and force customers to order at the counter--finally they have table service! The food is either really good (Bistro Special Sandwich) or just okay--almost all of the pizzas. The pizza dough does not appear to be homemade and is always under-done--which is great in the crust, but nasty on the bottom. The sauce is unremarkable with little spice. The "Homemade Onion Rings" are not--but they are cleverly placed on the grill to be camouflaged with burn marks. Oh and another thing--as the waiter rather rudely pointed out--they don't take American Express--one of the only restaurants on Main Street not taking it. On the plus side, the bistro special sandwich was very good and the sangria was delicious.

This restaurant is good for lunch but overpriced for dinner. we went for anniversary dinner spent alot and had poor service also Initaially ordered special than told they are out. I asked for an iced tea refill during my meal and was told " we have no more tea" I had seen the staff cleaning like they were closing yet we had just started dinner. I was finally able to get a cup hot tea and put my own ice. Hubbys Bistro sandwich dry and hard. I asked for tartar sauce for my crab sandwich told they dont have this. waiter disappered and we had to ask for things we wanted at end paying at counter my hubby tried to tell owner issues he was defensive didnt listen to concerns. also saw an adjacent table complain re their sandwich owner came out and explained it but didnt offer anything else. diappointed diner.

I ordered a shrimp salad wrap with slaw, scallops for an appetizer. Wife got a Tuscan chicken wrap with the slaw as well. Everything was amazing. Nice, quiet place. Comfortable and somewhat romantic without the stuffy feeling. A definite keeper.

I stumbled upon this little hole in the wall while looking for a place to eat dinner when I was in Ellicott City for the first time. Overall, my experience was good but I probably would not return. I ordered the spicy shrimp and crab salad and the New England clam chowder while my boyfriend had the crab melt. I must say that these dishes were quite good. The dressing on the salad perfectly complemented the seafood and the clam chowder was flavorful and creamy. The crab melt was simple, nothing spectacular, but tasted good. While I enjoyed the food, I felt like it was incredibly overpriced. The crab melt was about $20 and it only came with shoe string fries. My soup was about $6 and the salad was $15, which is a little more reasonable but still steep. Like everyone else, I felt that the ordering process was bizarre. If I'm going to pay as much as I did for my food, I don't feel like I should have to stand in a line while the cashier takes my order. I also didn't feel like I should have to return to the counter to have my water refilled (wanted to try the sangria but didn't have my ID). The counter ordering is annoying and tacky and allows the table service to slack. As I said, the food is good but wildly overpriced. The crab melt should have been about $12-$15. Further, the counter service takes away from what could be a classy, interesting little place to eat in the historic district.

I would eat here every weekend if I could. I've been to Johnny's seven or eight times, and have never been disappointed. It's a bit pricy for what you get, but everything tastes delicious. I've had table service and ordered at the counter, but neither one really bothers me. Johnny himself is very nice, and has come out to talk to my table a few times - once when my parents were visiting and I was introducing them to Ellicott City, and once when dining with my husband. I will continue to go back.

Despite having lived in the Ellicott city vicinity for a couple years, this past week was the first time I've been to this restaurant . I was pleasantly surprised! The menu was more lunch-y than someplace you would go for dinner, but really it could be an anytime of the day meal. There were sandwiches, soups, and pizza. Having not been in the mood for a sandwich, I got the grilled chicken pizza which was very good. The toppings were sufficient and blended well together and the crust was exceptional! I will definitely be back here, and hopefully next time to one of their sandwiches. They also will bring you out a sample of their soup of the day (or week?) for you to try. At the time of my visit, the soup was split pea. It was very good and I would have ordered a bowl had it not been for the pizza I was already set on ordering. I would recommend this place and can see myself coming back here for the foreseeable future.

Soups are made from scratch and rotate regularly and there are different lunch and dinner specials each day. We have eaten roughly everything on the menu multiple times and each item has been reliably delicious. The pizza is hand-tossed on site, the sandwiches are great (the bistro is a favorite - marinated slices of skirt steak with a light char on the outside, sauteed onions and an herby mayo on chewy bread. The coleslaw is a Williamsburg style slaw, so it's vinegary with no mayo and a little bit of celery seed... very fresh and tasty. The owner comes out and greets each table when it isn't too busy, but he's back in the kitchen most times supervising and completing the food prep and keeping things moving. The creme brulee is full of vanilla flecks and super rich, and the bourbon vanilla bread pudding kicks ass.

Quirky little bistro (the Baltimore Sun said it best: "midscale") with people who care in the kitchen. Homemade soup and chili were excellent, as was all the kids fare ( grilled cheese, fries). The cooked veggies were also well excecuted (warm mushroom salad and the grilled romaine heart that came with my steak). Staff was very friendly. The grill work is the big weakness: both my bison steak and my wife's grilled chicken were uninspiring.

Service was poor. We weren't greeted or seated, and our waitress infrequently visited our table. Ordered the vegetarian sandwich. It was decent...probably a little too much bread for the amount of veggies that they put in. The whole menu is a bit overpriced.

We dine here about once a month. Their pizza dough is very good quality. Everything here has been good quality and I think the food is an exceptional value for what you pay. You can usually see the owner prepping and cooking the good. The staff is usually attentive.

The pea with applewood bacon soup was good. The pork and beef burger was good. The service could have been better. It did not help either to hear and see the chef fussing at our waitress and others in the kitchen. Overall good food, but service that leaves more to be desired.

Wanted to check this place out but it was either closed or I wasn't hungry. Restaurant just opened & came in for lunch. We were able to sit at the table by the window. The specials sounded good & I went with the pulled pork/BBQ wrap with cheddar. Came with cucumber salad & shoestring fries. The wrap was REALLY good. The salad was good, I'm not a big raw onion fan but tried eating the other parts of it. I loved the fries too, they were crispy, not mushy or burnt. Waitress was great. Apple pie a la mode was really good. Reading other reviews, maybe they changed the ordering at counter part for dining in. There was a couple at the counter but the order was to go.

My husband and I stopped here for quick lunch before an event we needed to attend. I ordered a chicken wrap and my husband ordered crab cake sandwich. He also ordered soup of the day, clam chowder soup. Both wrap and crab cake sandwich was OK, nothing special. And we never got the soup. Didn't really understand because the place wasn't even that busy. The staff wasn't as attentive as they should have been. This place is just ok...I probably wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

My family and I came in on a Friday night and really enjoyed our first visit. Our server was Jenna, who was an excellent waitress. I looked at the reviews for this restaurant, which indicated service was poor. Not the case for our visit. The food was excellent! We got the sausage pizza, wild Alaskan salmon crostini with fresh dill cream cheese, the Maryland crab soup special, and crème brûlée. I had to request the salmon be cooked after receiving it and learning it was raw (as I'm pregnant). Chef was very willing to put it on the grill for me. Seating was limited, but you cannot avoid that on Main Street in Ellicott city! Over all we had an excellent time and plan on going back!

My sister and Mom stopped by here for dinner after shopping around downtown Ellicott City. It was great! My sister got the Bistro sandwich (delicious) that came with shoestring fries and a pickle. My Momma and I shared a Greek pizza and house salad. Everything was super fresh and yummy - we were all impressed! I like that Johnny's Bistro on Main Street has just the right kind of atmosphere for anything ranging from a family dinner to a casual date. I think downtown EC has plenty of options for pubs and super fancy pants restaurants, but not enough of the vibe Johnny's Bistro offers. The food is fresher and a little more sophisticated than pub food and the atmosphere is definitely upbeat but not boisterous. Yet, the prices they offer are far more affordable vs the fancier places around. (For dinner, our bill came out to around ~$40 (incl. tip) for the 3 of us). A quick word about the service - everyone was very friendly! If I had *one* con, it's that it's a little confusing about whether guests seat themselves/order at the counter or wait for their order to be taken. There's a sign that says "order at the counter" but we had a dedicated waitress who ended up taking our order and checking up on us. BUT I think the atmosphere, quality of food, and reasonable prices make Johnny's a five star in my book. It was the perfect dinner after a nice afternoon spent shopping around the small businesses of downtown EC :) All in all, we will definitely be back here!

We stopped in for the first time Saturday night on a whim and I'm glad we did! This place is quaint, fast and tasty! We both had the crab cake sandwich. They fancied it up with words like "brioche" "remoulade" which I won't be able to put in context appropriately so let's say this: There was a toasted bun, a delish crab cake, a tomato and a creamy sauce. Side of fries (which are shoe string and most of mine were burnt so this was the only area of opportunity to be had at this place) and finished with a dill pickle. I had a great glass of a house blend red. It was great. They were sold out of the deep dish apple pie but that's ok my waist line probably didn't need it anyway. The waitress was efficient and thoughtful. There was a big table and she took our order first so we didn't get stuck waiting...very good move!

This is a great sandwich shop and pizza place. Daily specials and tapas menu. About 12 tables inside, so when they were full up, they took our name and then called us back when the table was ready. Fresh ingredients and taste. Like it!

Great food! We ordered the crack crab sandwich (market price of 18$) and the turkey sandwich with home made cole slaw and shoe string fries as sides. I really like how light the crab cake batter was and how it consist of mainly lump crab meat. The sandwich was light and fulfilling. The turkey sandwich was also very light and delicious. Great lunch on a hot summer day. I'm not a huge fan of the slaw but the husband enjoyed it. It's too tart for me and not enough mayo. Overall great lunch! One side comment: wished the restaurant didn't smell like a restaurant (ie: bleach and cleaning agents)

I think Johnny's is very cute. Fits Old Ellicott City well. The day started out well.. I was able to find a parking space and we got a table right away. Things pretty much went downhill from there. The server was super young and incredibly rude. Clearly no one had taught her how to welcome someone to a restaurant and treat her customers. She did not offer drinks for at least 10 minutes and dropped off a soup sample before even speaking to us. I got the Mahi Mahi taco special that came out as a wrap. The special was advertised as a taco and did not come out as such. It had decent flavor but was served with clearly from the freezer French fries. They were poorly executed and barely warm. My friend got the Italian bistro panini. She said it was okay as well. It was much more bread than meat/cheese. I would def not choose to return. It was a poor experience and the food lacked creativity, substance and depth. I think there are definitely better places to eat in Ellicott City.

I had been wanting to give this place a try and thought the perfect opportunity was when my parents were visiting and we were shopping on Main Street. We were greeted by the server Jamie who at first impression was friendly and welcoming. When we were ready to order I asked if I could have soup bc I did not want fries or slaw. When he replied with an absolute no I must choose fries or slaw I tried to ask if I could still have the soup the price did not matter but I just did not want the fries or slaw at all. His response was the same so I took the slaw and we ordered the bowl of soup. I understand when places have no substitutions but the server does not have to be rude when the questions are asked especially when it does not say NO substitutions on the menu. We were pleased enough with our entrees but around 1500 he came back to our table to ask if we wanted dessert bc the kitchen was closing. We were taken aback by this we were unaware they were closing at all in the middle of the day...on their door the hours are stated 11-9pm not showing any time period they between lunch and dinner stated. When I questioned Jamie, the server, saying I did not see anything on the door he again with an attitude remarked it's right on the door. When I went to look for something saying that they close between 1500 and 1830 the sign I found was the one they put up after they close that says closed for siesta will reopen at 1830. Maybe they rely on tourism and people that will not return soon whether service is good or bad, which to me is still not an exception to provide poor customer service. As a local person who tries to dine/shop locally etc it is a shame that their service will prevent me from dining here in the future.

I always make Johnny's Bistro on Main Street a lunch stop when I bring my out-of-town friends to the HIstoric District. This time I split a Warm Mushroom Salad and Three Cheese Pizza with my girlfriend. Like always in the past, it was yummy! I don't mind ordering and paying at the counter. The food and service more than makes up for getting in a few extra steps.

Delicious! Homemade cream of crab soup was great as well as pork belly/ steak burger and the shrimp and kale salad. Nice ambiance and service was excellent.

Stopped in for dinner and was pleasantly surprised; this is a gem! We ordered the hummus special, the Bistro sandwich, and The Wrap. Sandwiches were delightful! Staff were friendly and attentive. Prices were reasonable, especially for such a delicious meal. I highly recommend.

My husband and I love this place. They have the best slaw! The salmon sandwich (King of the Sea) is my husband's favorite. All of their soups are excellent. The owner is so friendly and loves to chat with his customers. Romantic atmosphere to grab a glass of wine on the weekends.

Service was poor. We weren't greeted or seated, and our waitress infrequently visited our table. Ordered the vegetarian sandwich. It was decent...probably a little too much bread for the amount of veggies that they put in. The whole menu is a bit overpriced.

Food was delicious and original! Most places in Old Town are quite a bit more expensive too!. Had the black n blue Angus burger.... Yum! Nice wine selection also.
